Matangeshwar Temple is located outside the Western Group of Khajuraho temples, though hardly a 5 minutes foot-walk away. Since, unlike many other Khajuraho temples, it’s still in everyday use, it has been kept outside fenced enclosure. Active Shiv Lingam worship can be observed here. One of the significant aspect of its architecture is that the pillars and walls are plane but the roof is intricately carved and sculpted. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Matangeshwar Temple has an 8 meter high lingam. South to this temple is an open-air archaeological museum which is actually an accumulation of a fine collection of works of statues and friezes of the region: the remains of the temples long gone. Earlier, this open air museum was called as Jardine Museum.
