Constructed in 1100 AD with plenty of interesting carvings to admire, Chaturbhuj Temple of southern group of temples, is worth a stop as you make a way through the temples of Khajuraho. Chaturbhuj Temple is a Vishnu temple. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is also called Jatakari Temple as it is located in Jatakari village. Chaturbhuj is synonymous with Vishnu. The meaning of Chaturbhuj can be deciphered thus - Chatuh in Sanskrit means four and Bhuja means hands thus the god with four hands i.e. Lord Vishnu. Unlike hallmark of Khajuraho temples, Chaturbhuj Temple is bereft of any erotic sculptural depiction. The 2.7 meter high idol of Lord Vishnu’s Chaturbhuj form is south facing. Built on a modest pedestal, Chatarbhuj temple, part of southern group of temples, does have a sanctum but miss ambulatory, vestibule, mandapam and an entrance porch. The size of the temple is modest. Its outer walls are profusely sculptured. It is a temple of normal apex.
