The Big Lake - Bada Talab

It was built around 1000 years back by Parmar king Bhoj. There is a story behind the construction of this lake. Once king Bhoj got inflicted with a skin infection. All ‘vaidyas’ declined to treat it. One day a saint told the king to build a tank having connections of 365 streams. He said that if you take a bath in the water of such a tank, your skin disease will be removed. Bhoj ordered his engineers to construct a tank as per the instruction of the saint. He searched the suitable place near Betwa River. It is located 32 km away from present Bhopal. When investigated, there were 359 streams. A Gond leader Kalia showed a secret river and completed. There are competitions of kayaking and canoeing in Bada Talab now-a-days. It is also called as Upper Lake and is 4.43 km. long and 4.1 km wide.

On a side of the large lake, M.P. Tourism Development Corporation has developed a boat club to facilitate a small touristic sport. Tourists enjoy here the colorful paddle boats and steamers. Its foundation was laid by the then Chief Minister Arjun Singh on 15.8.1984. It now organizes water sports tournament of national level.
