Bhopal is an exception in India, as the city has experienced the successive reign of three women who have done much for the Islamic heritage of the city. The Juma Masjid built in 1837 by Begum Kudsia, the Moti Masjid built in the model of the Jama Masjid of Delhi by Begum Sikandar Jahan in 1860, and the Taj-ul-Masjid which, though incomplete, is the largest mosque in India, are striking monuments. Of less impressive size, the Jama Masjid raises its golden minarets in the colorful bazaar. It owes its construction to Qudsia Begum, one of the many women who ruled the city. His daughter, Sikander Jahan Begum, not to be outdone, built the Moti Masjid, modeled on the Jama Masjid of Delhi. The result is more modest. Idgah and tombs of Muslim era are also worth watching.
