Bhojpur

Twenty-eight km from the city, this place is famous for its exquisite Shiva Temple built by Raja Bhoj in the 11th century. Also known as the Somnath of northern India, the temple contains many images of Lord Shiva. The main Lingam, the symbol of Shiva, is carved out of a single stone. It is known for a very huge Shivlinga. It was established by Raja Bhoj. Every year, a huge and popular fair takes place on Makar Sankranti. Bhojpur can be reached by bus or taxi. If somebody wishes to go in the morning, one can be back to Bhopal in the afternoon or evening of the same day. There is a Jain Temple about 1 km away where a statue of Tirthankar Shantinath (22.5 feet) is located.
