Marine Drive is called as the Queen’s Necklace because of the street lights present in the road that make it look like a string of pearls giving it an illusion of a necklace. To experience this, a lot of tourists visit the place at the night time and walk over the elevated line along the pathway of the drive. The road is perfectly lined with the palm trees making it more scenic. The four legged concrete structures or the boulders throughout the stretch are prominent feature of Marine Drive. It looks like these boulders are binding themselves to each other. They line up alongside the whole of the sea shore. These boulders are called as the ‘tetra pods’ and they are in that shape because of a purpose. The waves of the Arabian Sea have enough energy in them and those hit the shore hard. These tetra pods form a porous boundary as they are placed in an interlocking pattern to protect from the waves hitting hard at the shore. These rocks absorb the energy and as they are porous, they let some water to flow around and not against it. So, these rocks are not just for the beauty or the scenic purpose, but they also serve an intelligent purpose.
Marive Drive is also recognised as the largest viewing gallery of the world. A lot of events and majorly the bigger events have been hosted at the place over the years. This promenade was built very sturdy which did not require any type of reconstruction for next 72 years. The place is referred to as the Miami of Mumbai because of its exquisite architectural beauty with offices on one side, apartment blocks, cinema theatres, built in the Art Deco style. This resembles the Miami architecture. This is not only a tourist spot but it also attracted a lot of rich business during the 1940s and 1950s.
