Buddhist Architure & History

Mumbai, with all its glory, street madness and nightlife, also has little corners in between which hide some precious old gems. Mahakali Caves in Andheri East are the hidden architectural & historical gems which make for a beautiful place to relax and escape the city chaos. These caves were termed as Kondivite Caves by James Campbell for being located nearby the Kondivite village. A group of 19 rock cut caves is 2000 years old and served as a Buddhist monastery back in those days. These rock-cut ‘chaityas’ & ‘viharas’ (chapels & cathedrals of the Buddhist) were built between 1st century BC & 6th century AD. It can easily be noticed that Kondivite Caves were carved out and embellished in two different time period. The visible difference reflects in Hindu influence on the later era of construction. Although these caves aren’t as huge as the caves in Ajanta & Ellora, but these have their own special designs. The architecture and stone carvings amply suggest that Mahakali or Kondivite Caves were home to Buddhist monks some time in history. One can find scriptures written in Pali, which is an ancient language, said to be older than Sanskrit even. Even though the caves are named as Mahakali Caves, the Kondivite Caves have nothing to do with Goddess Kali. Though most of the caves, being ‘viharas’, are simple in design and embellishment but the Cave number IX, a ‘chaitya’, is sumptuously decorated with carvings. It’s uniquely semicircular, so, the local people called it ‘Anasicha Kamara’ – granary.

Amidst chaotic metropolitan city of Mubai, Mahakali Caves are definitely a step into golden olden days. The cluster of 19 caves is segmented in lots of two, where one group of four caves is situated towards the northwest and the other part is a group of fifteen, towards the northeast area. The caves are carved out of solid basalt rock and called ‘viharas’, ideally where the monks stayed. One of the caves from the lot two, which is the cave number nine, is said to have been the prayer hall, also called ‘chaitya’. This is also the largest cave with images of Lord Buddha engraved on them. The rocks of these Buddhist ‘viharas’ are comparatively less resistant to continuous effects of inclement weather and sustained natural erosion. There are not many details remaining since this rock weathers very easily. That’s why, the images of Lord Buddha engraved on the walls of the caves are not clearly visible as those have become mutilated. In order to prevent further erosion or collapse, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a government body that takes care of ancient monuments, has applied cement to support structures. The area has been cleared of all encroachments. The Mahakali Caves still contain a stupa, inscriptions and Buddhist mythological sculptures. The inscription suggests that this Buddhist ‘vihara’ got royal patronage of the dynasties ruled the area and general public. Inscription reads: "Gift of a Vihar, with his brother, by Pittimba a Brahman of the Gotamas gotra, an inhabitant of Pachi Kama."

The Mahakali Caves, located on a hill that overlooks the link road, is one of the finest specimens of rock cut monastery and makes for an ideal spot for archaeologists and history buffs. Earlier there was no entrance fee but now entry ticket has been introduced. These caves still are quite a sight to see and are accessible from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Since cameras are allowed inside, photos can be taken and videos can be shot. Shops and eating joints are available nearby to purchase eatables and drinks. A modern, neat & clean washroom facility is also available.
