The celebration of festivals in Mumbai such as Coconut Day and immersion of Ganesha idols take place on Girgaum Chowpatty Beach. This is where millions gather on big days like Ganesh Chaturthi. Rich and poor, frail and hearty move to the sea with clay or plaster or even silver or gold representations of Lord Ganesh, the elephant-God. Families bring their statuettes out from their dwellings to this “auspicious” location on the sea. Clay images of Lord Ganesha are brought to Chowpatty Beach and immersed amid much rejoicing.
Besides little kiosks selling Mumbai’s specialty, Bhel Puri and Kulfi, there are professional masseurs (remember Johny Walker in film ‘Pyasa’ singing ‘Sar jo tera chakaraye’, pony leaders, bee bee-gun shooting galleries, contortionists, snake charmers, monkey-trainers, balloon sellers, flower-girls and lot more. On any evening of the year Chowpatty is busy; yogis bury themselves in the sand, fishermen haul in their nets, children romp, and hungry working people flock to the stalls for Bhel Puri and colored drinks. Chowpatty Beach, one of the famous tourist attractions in Mumbai, is frequently visited by couples, families and local picnickers.
