Shalimar Garden, one of the Mughal Gardens in Srinagar, is the most beautiful park of yester era but preserved impeccably till date. Laid out nearly four centuries ago by Jahangir for his Queen Nur Jahan, Shalimar Garden is representative of Charbagh style Mughal Gardens and spread over an area measuring 30.6 acre. Fifteen km from the city, built in 1619 by Emperor Jahangir, Shalimar Bagh is a beautiful garden with rows of Chinar trees and a marble palace at its centre. On the four terraces of the garden, the fourth one used to be reserved for the royal ladies. From May to October, the India Tourism Development Corporation presents a sound-and-light show here. Unlike the muddy -colored snow-waters of the Jhelum, those of Dal Lake are crystal clear, being fed by springs. At intervals, all round the 12 square miles surface stand the giant plane trees, called chinars, planted by the Mughal rulers. These chinar trees form the background to Shalimar Bagh, meaning the Garden of Love. Shalimar Garden in Srinagar consists of marble pavilions, terraces, fountains and cascades. Great landscape gardeners, these Mughal rulers relied not so much on the show of flowers as on the theme of the design. It has survived the centuries and, together with the great chinars, lend poetic glamour to the scene.
