Nishat Bagh, a hotspot of Srinagar tourism, is considered to be the best among all the Mughal gardens. Nishat Bagh is situated on the banks of the Dal Lake, 11 km. from the city, in the lap of Zabarwan hills. The garden is laid out in ten terraces, with cascades, chenar trees, flowerbeds and fruit trees. Largest of all Mughal Gardens, the 544 x 328 sq meter Nishat Bagh was designed by Asaf Khan, Shah Jahan's father-in-law, as a terraced garden surrounded by high walls. The 19 terraces represent 12 signs of the zodiac. This place is treated as a must visit place because of its atmosphere of love. The Nidhat Bagh is called as the “Garden of Bliss”, “Garden of Joy” and “Garden of Pleasure”. The Nishat Bagh rising from the Dal Lake in terraces of flowerbeds, with its avenue of cascades playing their crystal waters against the blue mountain background has a grandeur all its own. Nishat Bagh’s layout or architecture can be divided into two parts- one, the public garden (meant for general public, and, second, the private garden (meant for the women in ‘harem’). The garden is laid out in a modified form of Persian Charbagh Gardens with four rivulets of wine, honey, milk and water, symbolizing paradise (jannat), emanating from a central reservoir. The modification in the style is due to the source of water at Nishat Bagh being at the highest point of the garden rather than at the center.
