As per the legend, Savitri was the wife of Lord Brahma. After establishing Pushkar, Lord Brahma began to prepare a ‘yajna’. During ceremonies like a ‘yajna’, the man has to keep his wife seated beside him.So, Lord Brahma sent his son Narad to bring Savitri to the ‘yajna’ spot. Savitri was ready to come with Narad. Narad suggested her to come along with the wives of some ‘rishis’ (saints & sages), Indrani (wife of Indra), Parvati (consort of Lord Shiva) and Laxmi (wife of Lord Vishnu). It was suggested so by Narad because Lord Brahma was sitting at ‘yajna’ spot with several great ‘rishis’. Narad Muni went back to Lord Brahma and informed him that Savitri would take some time to come. Lord Brahma and the sages, fearing that auspicious moment of initiating ‘yajna’ may elapse, thought of bringing another girl, supposedly as Brahma’s wife, to sit beside Brahma. Having decided upon the way out, they managed to bring a girl and proclaimed her as Lord Brahma’s spouse. She was named Gayatri and they started ‘yajna’. After sometime, Savitri also reached the ‘yajna’ spot. Having seen another consort of Brahma, she got enraged and cursed not only his husband but all prominent gods. She cursed Brahma that he will nowhere be worshipped in the world except at this place i.e. at Pushkar in Rajasthan. The persons who will worship Brahma elsewhere will become poorer. Savitri then turned to Lord Vishnu who had approved of Gayatri as Brahma’s wife. She cursed him to take birth as a human being to suffer a long separation from his wife to understand the real sorrow of being away from the beloved ones. She cursed Lord Shiva as well to remain unhappy, always. She also cursed the Brahmin sages and the cow in the ‘yajna’. Soon after this episode, she left the ‘yajna’ spot, went to the top of the nearby Ratnagiri hill and started great penance.
In her memory, there is a temple on the hill. Due to great penance and sacrifices, Savitri will always be worshiped first and before Gayatri. Since then, this tradition of worship is going on like this. Now the temple houses idol of Gayatri too in its complex. The devotees, having ‘darshana’ of Goddess Savitri in the temple, get what they desire. It is also said that a woman devotee of Goddess Savitri dies ‘suhagin’.
