As per the legend, Lord Brahma had two wives – Savitri & Gayatri. Savitri was the first wife and Gayatri the second one. When Lord Brahma was about to perform a ‘yajna’ in Pushkar, Savitri was to accompany him since the beginning but she could not reach in time and, as per the suggestion of the saints and Brahmins, another girl Gayatri was brought in by Indra to get her seated as Lord Brahma’s wife. As per the legend, the girl belonged to Gopa community and, hence, was purified by putting her into a cow’s mouth and taking her out from the end by Indra. Since the girl was put into the mouth of a cow to make her pious so she was called Gayatri. Pushkar has two different shrines for both the wives – Savitri & Gayatri - of Lord Brahma. These temples are on different hills.
