Initially started as a festival to honor Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe, Pushkar Fair also became the largest camel show on earth. The 200,000 pilgrims and farmers who attend Pushkar Fair each year are joined by 50,000 camels and cattle, all descending to the small town of Pushkar on the edge of the Marusthali desert. The annual Pushkar Camel Fair is an experience that will make a magical holiday in Rajasthan. A city of tents is created next to Lake Pushkar during the full moon days for this fair. It is here that thousands of men and women cover the sand dunes and engage in festivities, exchanges of livestock, and craft activities. Participate in camel races, dances, dramas and music contests. It is a truly dramatic event that shines and shines with rich colors and a dynamic life.
The annual fair in Pushkar is a serious affair for villagers who spend days traveling through the desert to Pushkar in hopes of turning the camels into cash. Pushkar Lake is sacred for Hindus and religious ceremonies take place simultaneously as camels are exchanged. The night at the fair ground takes on a carnival atmosphere. The Ferris wheel attracts the queues of laughing Rajput women in their richly colored saris and sparkling bangles that extend from the wrist to the shoulder.
Road vendors sell pots, pans, bracelets, saris, belts and other items. The campfires punctuate the black desert like bright stars while the evening meal is prepared. Hindu holy men, vendors, musicians, actors, tattooists, wedding brokers, foreigners and tourists gather at the venue of the Pushkar Fair that lasts seven days. At night, the sounds of folk music, storytellers, dances and evenings take place in the desert.
