The Ramayana mentions Pushkar, and says that Sage Vishvamitra performed ‘tapa’ (penance) here. It further says that the Apsara Menaka came to Pushkar to bathe in its sacred waters. The Mahabharata, while laying down a program of Maharaja Yudhishthara’s travel, says, Maharaja after entering the Jungles of Sind, and crossing the small rivers in the way, should bathe in Pushkar. Some punch-marked coins have also been discovered at this place. From the Vaaman Puran, it is known that Prahlad, on his pilgrimage to holy places, visited ‘Pushkarayana’ and took bath in Pushkar Lake. Thus, up to the Gupta period, the sanctity of Pushkar town and Pushkar Lake remained as great as it is today.
The oval shaped lake has 52 ghats. In the month of Kartik of Indian calendar (October-November) a great fair is held here. This fair is worldwide famous as Pushkar Fair. Apart from the shrine of Brahma, there are hundreds of other shrines around Pushkar. Parvati Temple on a close-by hillock is an excursion.
