Sardar Government Museum contains the following branches of arts and science: (a) Archaeology - sculptures, inscriptions and coins, (b) History— documents and carvings, (c) Armoury, (d) Picture Gallery, (e) Natural History, (f) Textiles, (g) Pottery, (h) Industrial Section of local arts and crafts, (i) Educational apparatus including astronomical and scientific objects of educational value and (j) Minerals. Though formerly a public library was attached to the museum, it has now been separated. Occasionally students from colleges are explained the material in the museum. The labels for the exhibits are in English and Hindi. The Superintendent of Archaeology and Museums, Jodhpur circle in Rajasthan, looks after the museum.
Sardar Government Museum is located in the Umaid Public Park on the outskirts of the city. The splendid building houses more than 400 stone sculptures and 1900 paintings. A large number of tourists visit the museum regularly but on special occassions in August and September there is a larger stream of visitors. Additions to the collection are made by purchase, treasure trove, donation and exchange. The Sardar Museum is recognised for treasure trove purposes. It is an institutional member of the Museum Association of India.
