Eight km from the city is Mandore Garden, the ancient capital of Marwar, its original name being Mandavyapur.
Mandore Gardens near Jodhpur is a historical site of Rajasthan. The former capital of Marwar contains
beautifully carved cenotaphs amid gardens and the ''shrine of the 300 million gods", containing a row
of gigantic painted images of divinities and mythological heroes. During 6th to 9th century, Mandore was
capital city of Pratihara dynasty. The ruling dynasties kept lording over the region from Mandore till the
capital of Marwar was shifted to Jodhpur in 1459 AD due to enhanced security concerns and consideration.
The remnants of ancient capital of Marwar can still be traced here. The town of Marwar is home to several
historical monuments like Mandore Fort, old Mandore Palace and Ravan Temple. Mandodari, wife of demon king
Ravan, belonged to Mandore. Therefore, a temple of Ravan, son-in-law of Mandore people, has been built here
to honor him. Rich flora and fauna of Mandore Gardens create captivating natural scenery. Royal cenotaphs
in the garden are worth watching for history and archaeology buffs. Amidst a large garden the cenotaphs of
the rulers in sandstone, built in Shaiva and Buddhist patterns, can be observed. A temple having pantheon
of Hindu gods and Government Museum in Mandore are must see attractions. Among other fascinating monuments
to be visited in Mandore are cenotaph of Maharaja Ajeet Singh and ‘Hall of Heroes’ which commemorates the
folk heroes and popular Rajputs of the region. A 4th century temple in ruins is also seen here. The atmosphere
is refreshing and blissful, with several shrines and monuments. Nearby is the palace of Maharaja Abhaya Singh.
