History of Jodhpur

Rathores of Jodhpur belonged orinally to Kaunaj where they had been evicted by the Afgans. They moved to Pali district of Rajsthan. Siahji Rathore, the patron of the clan, entered into nuptial relation with the sister of a local prince. It helped the Rathores to have a foothold in this region. At that time, the Pratiharas used to rule the roost. After garnering strength, the Rathores defeated and evicted the Pratiharas of Mandore. At that time, Mandore used to be capital of this region. Mandore is located 9 kms from present day Jodhpur. Initially, Mandore served as their capital, but, by 1459 AD, Rathores felt a need for a secure capital. Later Rao Jodha founded Jodhpur, the second largest city of Rajasthan.

In order to avoid unnecessary material and personnel loss, Rothores established understanding and good relations with the Mughals. Maharaja Jaswant Singh even supported Shahjahan in his struggle for succession. After Aurangzeb, Maharaja Ajeet Singh chased out the Mughals from Ajmer and incorporated this territory into Jodhpur kingdom. The modern day flourishing and developed city of Jodhpur is result of Maharaja Umed Singh’s vision and endeavour.
