Over the time, this abandoned village became a haunted site & left to ruins. Ruins of about 410 houses have stayed for years now. As per another version of the story, Salim Singh levied high taxes on the villagers and since they couldn’t afford to pay, they fled. Many people also believe that the Paliwal Brahmins of Kuldhara village buried their wealth before leaving, presuming to return some day in future. But, since they couldn’t return and all of them died over the years, they have now returned in the form of spirits, guarding their wealth and living in their loving homes that they had to leave due to the circumstances back then.
The more scientific reasons gathered over the years for the abandonment of the village revolve around water scarcity & an earthquake. The river flowing nearby dried up causing potable water’s paucity. Thus, the villagers had no choice but to leave the place. While some say, the village was badly hit by an earthquake. As a justifying reason they point towards the fact that all the houses are in ruins and without roofs. Since the village was in shambles, the villagers moved to another place to start afresh. The people who don’t fall for the paranormal activities and keep away from spirit stories, normally settle on these two reasons. But there have been reports of sounds, pats on the shoulders and an unsettling presence that has been recorded & felt by the researchers from the ‘Paranormal Society’ when they stayed overnight to test if the village is really haunted.
The village is an abandoned site, which now makes up for a tourist spot and is a monument protected and preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India. Some houses are open for the tourists to see all the things the Paliwal Brahmins left behind and explore around with a guide. The village has its many tales, yet remains beautiful in many ways.
