There are three lakes in the national park that make up the major watering holes for the creatures in the park. There are said to be about 40 reptile varieties including the Common Monitor Lizard and the Spiny Tail Lizard. Another interesting find at the national park is the ‘Desert Skink’, also called the ‘Sand Fish’. It swims or burrows through sand and can go up to a depth of 30m. In addition to these species, varied birds add color and pomp to the hues of the sand dunes. The desert has very little leaf cover and only supports some small grass & shrubs. Therefore, lack of vegetation makes it inhospitable to herbivores; camel being the only exception. One can find a lot of sewan grass, aak shrubs & Rohira trees widespread here, but it is the sand that dominates. It is a pure delight to witness how the living life forms have adapted and prosper in these harsh conditions.
Located in the midst of sandy terrain, the Desert National Park in Jaisalmer holds up a unique landscape, with rocks and salt lake bottoms and fixed dunes. Although the park remains open throughout the year, with flora, fauna and a rich wildlife, October - March make the best time to visit the land, due to its harsh weather conditions in the other months.
Surrounded with the unique wildlife, rugged mountains, cracked land & sand dunes, the national park makes up for a great visit. Many also like to venture a bit more and camp at the desert national park. With bonfire in night and a winter chill in the air, it is truly a perfect setting for a night out.
