The Franciscan Order established in Goa its mother house to carry out the mission of evangelization in the East. The construction of the church was begun in 1518. Only
the portal of original Manueline style building remains. Some of the building materials were reused from a destroyed Hindu temple. In 1521 the construction of the convent
was finished. Twenty years later, St. Francis Xavier visits a Convent of St. Francis of Assisi, which grew from eight monks to forty. What we see today is the Baroque style
structure begun in 1661. The interior of the church annexed to the convent is probably the most admirable of the religious complex of Goa where we can appreciate the altars
of gilded carving and paintings with scenes of the life of the saint.
