Fixed-rate fares only apply during the peak season. At other times, a sharp reduction in the asking price is noticed and one must negotiate before hiring. Motorcycle taxis are popularly called ‘piolots’ in Goa. These are quite effective and cost effective means to hop from one beach or resort to another. The bona fide operators drive black bikes with yellow mudguards and yellow license plates. Another means of internal transport are leased motorbikes & scooters. These are quite affordable and offer a lot of freedom to tourists. The cost of leased bike / scooter varies as per its make, model, season and duration. Most owners also insist on a deposit and a passport (for foreigner) or government-approved identity card (for Indians) as security. Ferries are quite interesting and cost-effective means to travel in coastal areas. If autorickaws are the picturesque means of transport, essentially Indian, flat-bottomed ferries are their equivalent of Goa. Surrounded by cars, buses, commuters, scooters, fishermen and disconcerted tufts of tourists, these blue painted boats provide an essential service, crossing the coastal marshes where the bridges were not built. They are also incredibly reasonable and run from dawn until the end of the evening. The busiest rivers of Goa are the Mandovi River & the Tiracol River.
