Built between 1656 and 1661 by the theatrical monks of the Order of St. Caetano, Church of Sao Caetano is the least Portuguese church of the religious group of Goa Velha.
The design of the church was given to two Italian theatrical architects and the dominant architectural style is the Baroque. On the left side of the church we see the convent
wing of the monastic order. The Theatine monks were sent on an evangelistic mission to India by Pope Urban VIII. They established themselves in Goa but the relationship with
the Portuguese decision-making bodies was troubled. After much negotiation, D. John IV there allowed the monks to set up a hospice to care for the sick. Years later,
permission is given for the construction of the convent and church.
