Music & Dances in Goa

Known as Queen of Beaches, Goa is synonymous with beach holidays in India. Music and dance is interwoven in the social fabric of Goan people. Goa is a land of highly talented and artistic people with a rich cultural synthesis mixing the East and West with the most creativity. Music and dance form the fabric of rural Goa. In addition to various forms of classical music and dance, every occasion and region has its distinctive forms and uniqueness. Urban areas have adapted to modern and popular music styles.

Folk dances of Goa are a tradition of thousands of years, characterized by innumerable forms executed by reflective lifestyles, cultures and aspirations of different strata, religions and castes of Goan society. Women perform some traditional dances as Dekni - a rare blend of traditional and modern music. Fugdi & Dhalo are the most common traditional dances of Goa. The Kunbi is a tribal folk dance. Women, holding lamps on their heads, perform lamp dance during Shigmo festival. Morulem is another traditional folk dance presented by the backward community during Shigmo. The Zagor is a popular game presented in different villages of Goa by Gawda community. The Dhangar, performed during Navratri, is a vigorous session of worship and dance. Mando is a love song that represents the mixture of Indian and Western traditions.
