Another majestic example of the region's architectural prowess is the Teen Darwaza. These viaducts resting on three arches are quite imposing and their ornamentations are so delicate that it has become one of the symbols of the city. This building was erected in 1411 by the founder of the city, Sultan Ahmed Shah. It was then the entrance to the royal palace, at the top of which the princes observed the processions advancing towards them. The Teen Darwaza is a large gate with three arches through which one enters the bazaar (chowk). Teen Darwaza is also known or called as Tran Darwaja, Three Gates, Triple Gateway & Tripolia Gateway. The three arches give way to three pathways – the central one17 feet wide where as the remaining side-pathways 13 feet wide. The arch is 25 feet high with the top roofed formally. A lamp is lit as ‘Akhand Jyoti’ that as per legend suggests presence of Lakshmi in the region. An inscription on a marble plaque on the wall indicates victory & rule of the Marathas. The inscription by Fateh Singh Gaikwar in Dev Nagari script reads --- Let the daughter get her due share of property without any hitch. So is Lord Vishwanath’s command. If you defy, the Hindu will have to answer to Mahadev and the Mussalman will have to explain to Allah or Rasool.
