Built by Sultan Ahmed Shah in 1423, Jama Masjid of Ahmedabad (Friday Mosque of Ahmedabad) mosque, situated a little away from Tin-Daroja (Three Doors) at the centre of the city, is one of the largest mosques in India and the most perfectly built in western India. Here we find a harmonious mingling of Hindu and Muslim architecture—with its 16 domes resting on 260 pillars. The Jama Masjid suffered from an earthquake in 1818 which decapitated its minarets. With its vast square in the center of which stands an elegant pavilion with columns, it still remains imposing. Towards the west, the hall of the prayers, punctuated by numerous ornate pillars, is marked by beautiful mehrab. Note that the pillars are square at the base, then polygonal at six sides, then cylindrical. The upper part repeats the same sequence in the opposite direction.
