The admirers of the Mahatma will not miss a visit to the Ashram of Mahatma Gandhi, on the right banks of the Sabarmati river. Small, very simple pavilions, covered with red tiles, are scattered in a shady park. Objects belonging to Mahatma Gandhi are exhibited there: wooden sandals, spinning wheel, walking stick, watch, several dhotis of cotton etc. One enters the small room where he received his visitors, sitting on a thick mat, against a large cushion & his squatted desk. We can also see photos illustrating the highlights of his action: fasting, Salt Walk, extracts of spiritual thoughts from his wife Kasturba with, in particular, a photo where she looks at her husband.
Located on the banks of Sabarmati River, 7 kms north of the city, Gandhi Ashrama was Mahatma Gandhi's Hriday Kunj and for many years it was the nerve center of the freedom movement of India. It was from here, in 1930, Mahatma began his famous Dandi March to sea to protest against the salt tax imposed by the English. Gandhi Ashram has a commemorative center, library and a sound show to offer to its visitors.
