University of Allahabad

University of Allahabad is a world-renowned educational institution. It is one of the major tourist attractions in Prayagraj. Though Allahabad University was established in early 19th century by the British but tradition of learning & education in Prayagraj dates back to the time of the Vedas. In Allahabad, a shrine of high religious importance to the Hindu pilgrim is that of Bharadwaja. Named after the great sage who occupied a hermitage on the high bank overlooking the Ganga, the place is mentioned in the Ramayana. Bharadwaja had ten thousand pupils and, being the head of a clan, was able to provide them with free board and lodging. His ashram thus became a cross between a hermitage, a seat of learning, and a welfare institution. Two thousand years later, University of Allahabad occupies the same site of Bharadwaja Ashrama. The saga of the fourth oldest university of modern India, University of Allahabad, commences from September 23’1887 when the premier institution was established under the aegis of Sir William Muir, the Lt. Governor of the United Provinces. It’s archaic structure, reminiscent of the influences of Indo-Sarcenic & Egyptian architectural elements, was designed by Sir William Emerson. Allahabad University constitutes of constellation of scores of faculties, institutes, colleges and excellence centers.
