Patalpuri Temple is eighty four feet long and fifty feet wide. The roof, built of stone, rests on six and a half feet high pillars. There are seven rows of pillars. Each row contains twelve pillars. The middle row has double pillars. The total number of pillars is about a hundred. The main gate is on the west side. A grand statue of Goddess Kali at the entrance of Patalpuri Temple welcomes the pilgrims and devotees. From there, a flight of stairs leads to a long underground gallery. After going through the long passage, reach the sanctum sanctorum of the auspicious temple. The temple stands on large pillars. The walls of the gallery have several niches studded with sculptures of Goddess Annapurna and many other deities. The gallery leads to the ‘garbhagriha’ where beautiful idols of Ram, Sita & Laxman are installed and worshipped. Within the sanctum, there are several smaller shrines dedicated to different deities with their idols. There are idols of forty three deities within the temple. These deities are Akshayavat, Dharmaraja, Annapurna, Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, Ganesh Gauri, Shankar Mahadev, Sage Durvasa, Sage Valmiki, Prayagraj, Baidyanath, Karti Swami, Sati Anusuya, Varun Dev, Dand Pani Mahadev, Kaal Bhairav, Lalita Devi, Goddess Gangai, Goddess Yamuna, Goddess Saraswati, Lord Narasimha, Surya Narayan, Jamwant, Guru Dattatreya, Banganga, Satyanarayan, Shanidev, Sage Markadeya, Gupt Dan, Tankeshwar Mahadev, Parvati, Veni Madhav, Kuber Bhandari, Arsnath-Parsnath, Sankat Mochan Hanuman, Koteshwar Mahadev, Ram-Lakshman- Sita, Nag Vasuki Dudhnath, Yamraj, Siddhivinayak and Sun God.
Patalpuri Temple, with the undying Akshayavat at the center, in Allahabad Fort compound is of hoary antiquity, once visited by Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Prahlad. Entry is unrestricted during specified hours for pilgrims and visitors to the Patalpuri Temple inside the fort from its Ganga side gate. Considered as one of the oldest temples in India, Patalpuri Temple should be included in Prayagraj tour itinerary.
