but in 1984, the Government of India turned it into a formal Camel Research & Breeding Farm. Various kinds of researches and experiments are done on camels, the ship of desert,
here and hence help breeding finest quality of camels. The Camel Breeding Farm mostly employs local camel breeders, known as 'Raikas' or 'Rebers'. Located at about 8 km from
Bikaner city & spread over 2000 acres, the Camel Breeding Farm of Bikaner is one of its kinds in Asia and has more than 250 camels of different breeds. The long-haired camel
with hair on its ears is the variety, famed for its strength. The light-coloured camels are from Jaisalmer and are known for their speed. The dark-coloured camels come
from
Gujarat and the female camels are prized for their milk-producing capacity. The museum within the complex of National Camel Research Centre in Bikaner showcases
various researches and developmental activities being carried out. It’s a must-see place to enjoy a pleasant camel ride and understand the breading process.
In camel museum, a variety of handicrafts made from camel skin, camel hair and camel bone are displayed to be sold at very reasonable rates. Ice-cream made of camel milk
is available here and is definitely worth a try.
