How to Reach Bikaner

Bikaner, called City of the Desert & nicknamed the ‘country of camels’, is known for archaic charm, monuments of character, fabulous fort and intricately carved temples. Bikaner, one of the three prominent desert circuits and situated in the northern part of Rajasthan, was founded by Roa Bhikaji of Rathore clan of Jodhpur rulers in 1488 AD. The calm atmosphere of the city is ideal for the tourists wishing to avoid the tumult of the big Indian cities. Bikaner, being on the medieval great carvan trade route, has been very prosperous. In order to save the town from the marauding Mughals, Bikaner is surrounded by high fortifications comprising a seven-kilometer long wall which encircles the old city. Rao Bhikaji, the founder of Bikaner, had great faith in Goddess Karni, revered as incarnation of Goddess Durga. Since then, the Karni Mata Temple at Deshnok has been patronized by the ruling family. A salted snack made of lentils originated from Bikaner and hence is popularly known as 'Bikaneri Bhujia'. Well preserved forts, palaces, havelis and museum will showcase Bikaner's prosperous past.
