The fort was initially called Chintamani and was then renamed as the Junagarh or Old fort in the 20th century. The foundations of the Junagarh Fort were built in 1478 by Rao Bika. However, it existed just as a stone fort then. The present grand structure was inaugurated on 17th February 1589. Besides having a rich history, the Junagarh Fort is a feat of architecture.
A line of balconies and oriel windows of varying designs lend it a graceful dignity. The Junagarh Fort of Bikaner is home to intricately ornate and carved palaces like Anup Mahal (walls decorated with golden pen work), Diwan-e-Khas, Hawa Mahal, Badal Mahal, Chandra Mahal (decorated with remarkable frescoes), Phool Mahal (palace walls beautified by splendid mirror work), Rang Mahal, Dungar Mahal and Ganga Mahal. These palaces, decorated with mirror work and paintings, are remarkable for their columns, arches and delicate screens. Many chambers and rooms have been turned into museum with collection of royal weapons and vestments. Also, see a fine temple called Har Mandir in the courtyard of the Junagarh Fort of Bikaner.
