The present building of Odisha State Museum in Bhubaneswar, built in 1960, is a large two-storey complex with several halls surrounding an interior court, a beautiful flower garden. There are several galleries of archaeology, epigraphy, armory, numismatics, manuscripts, painting, anthropology, musical instruments, contemporary art, bronze, art & craft, natural history, textiles, furniture etc that exhibit numerous artefacts. It offers a good overview of Indian, as well as Odishan heritage. The epigraphy section showcases the evolution of the Oriya script. Most of the artifacts have short English descriptions but some halls lack dates.

The labels in the museum are bilingual in English and Oriya. The Utkal University and the colleges in Odisha evince interest in the museum. The museum is administered by the Director of Public Instruction and an Advisory Council appointed by the Government of Odisha. The number of visitors increases significantly during the Puja holidays. There is a night watchman and the coins and valuables are kept in iron safes, the gold coins being kept in the local treasury. The museum is an archaeological one and the collections comprise pre-historic antiquities, stone sculptures, metal images, terracottas, wood-carvings, arms, paintings, coins, palm-leaf manuscripts and historical records.
