Dandi Ghat is one of the prominent ghats of Varanasi and mostly visited by the faithful to take a holy dip in the Ganga and have blessings of the ascetics in a
monastery located at the top of the flight of the stone steps. The Dandi Ghat was built by local businessman of Varanasi Lallu Ji Agarwal in 19th century in
honor and comfort of Dandi monks who carry a stick, symbol of spiritual (not religious) uprightness and rule of ‘Dharma’. These Dandi Swamis or monks were
the torch bearer of the Dharma- the governing cardinal principles of the universe. Since the place above the ghat was monastery of stick holding ascetics,
this ghat was on the banks of River Ganga was named Dandi Ghat. The ghat was rebuilt by the state government of Uttar Pradesh in 1958. Dandi Ghat, a bathing
ghat of Varanasi, is marked with a gymnasium and a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. One can spot few holes in the step stones meant for Dandi Swamis’ sticks
to be fixed up therein while they bathe. There is a small building at the top of the Dandi Ghat which is related with Swami Vallabhacharya, a Hindu saint of
immense reverence. He is credited with evolving his own sect or ‘darshan’. From here, he took eternal dip (Jal-Samadhi) into holy River Ganga to ascend into
heaven.
