Baji Rao Ghat is among the five most popular bathing ghats of Varanasi. Baji Rao Ghat is a continuation of Lala Mishra Ghat. The credit of building this Ghat goes to Peshwa Baji Rao. He built it in 1735 AD on a grand scale but the huge work of masonry toppled under the weight of masonry. As a result, further work had been stopped. The unfinished façade and steps of ghat can still be observed. Peshwa Baji Rao also built Dattatreyeshwar Temple at the ghat. The temple holds immense reverence among the Marathi pilgrims. Dattatreyeshwar Temple has a touch of individuality about it, if not much in the way of beauty. Inside is a " paduka," the footprints of the great Brahman saint and teacher Dattatreya, in whom, parts of all the three deities, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, are said to have become incarnated. The temple is on a level with the footway above the ghat. Every rainy season when the river rises, it works away behind this temple, making deep fissures, and threatens to carry it away. The river appears to be peculiarly dangerous at this point of land, possibly there is some back current. Owing to the temple, the ghat is also known as Dattatreyeshwar Ghat. Jananavapi Kupa on the ghat is a famous well. The colonnade around Jananavapi Kupa was built by Rani Baijabai of Gwalior in 1830 AD. She rebuilt and repaired the Baji Rao Ghat at the same time. Many a times it is considered as part of Scindia Ghat too.
