Best Time to Visit Rishikesh

Touted as world’s Yoga capital, Rishikesh is a popular tourist destination in Uttarakhand. It is visited throughout the year but winter season attracts the highest number of foreign tourists. According to Puranic literature the surroundings of Rishikesh were bewitchedly attractive for Lord Shiva and it was at this place that Lord Vishnu killed the Madhukaitabh demon. Rishikesh had been a chosen place for penance by the saints and sages in India. It is also behind that Bharata the stepbrother of Lord Rama subjected himself to a severe penance here. Located at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas, Rishikesh is also a gateway to journeys to Badrinath , Gangotri , Kedarnath and Yamunotri. The headquarters of Baba Kali Kamliwala’s Uttarkhand tract is located here. Rishikesh is situated in very picturesque surroundings and is located on a right bank cliff overhanging on the river Ganga.

Rishikesh is close to Haridwar, one of the pilgrimages of the Hindus. In order to perform various religious rites, a large number of pilgrims come to Haridwar and keep exploring Rishikesh as well. Considered to be the abode of Narayana, Rishikesh is the holy city for Vaishnavites. The mountainous charm and natural panorama add so much to this beauty spot that it is aptly and justly regarded as the home of gods. The landscape of Rishikesh is dotted with several holy temples. Satya Narayan Temple, Bharat temple, Triveni Ghat, Geeta Bhawan are the important shrines in these surroundings very often visited by devotees and tourists. Though the influx of tourists into Rishikesh continues throughout the year but during fairs & festivals, winter season & summer holidays, the number of the tourist increases phenomenally.

Visiting Rishikesh during Winter Season: October to March duration is the winter season. Weather conditions, climate and temperature make winters the best time to visit Rishikesh. The temperature ranges between 8°C & 21°C. Foreign tourists reach here in large numbers in winter season. Many Hindu festivals are celebrated in these months.

Visiting Rishikesh during Summer Season: April to June is summer season in Rishikesh. Though due to scorching heat, the day time sightseeing remains limited to morning and late afternoon hours but evening exploration by the side of Ganga is extremely pleasant. The temperature varies between 15°C & 36°C. A sizeable number of domestic tourists visit Rishikesh during summer season, as school it coincides with summer vacations in Indian schools and colleges.

Visiting Rishikesh during Monsoon Season: The monsoon season (July to September) is characterized by moderate to heavy rainfall. The nearby landscape presents beautiful greenery. Owing to increased water level and flow in Ganga, water sports, especially water rafting, remain closed. Though the temperature remains normal but the humidity level is very high. The tariffs of the hotels ebb to their lowest, making stay in Rishikesh quite affordable. The temperature varies between 22°C & 34°C.
