Mandu of Madhya Pradesh was also known as Mandav or Mandap Durg. Ninety-five km from Indore, Mandu's legendary natural charm inspired many to build beautiful palaces and temples here. A cosy town nestling in the Vindhya Valley, at an altitude of 2,000 feet, Mandu became famous in the 11th century as the capital of Malwa under the Parmar kings. From 14th to 16th century, Mandu came under the occupation of the Khiljis, the Lodhis, and the Ghoris. Some of the rulers belonging to this period were enthusiastic builders.

Mandu still vibrates with the romance of Roopmati and Baz Bahadur-the last independent king of Mandu. This place was known by the name Shadiabad in the Mughal period and meant the pleasant city (The City of joy). The beauty of Mandav or Mandu is enhanced manifold during the rainy season. Fast flowing water from the circular path and situated in its centre the green Mandav, gives a deep satisfaction to the nature lovers. The voices of chanting birds in the water bodies create a unique music.
