Kota is situated on the slope of Malwa plateau. The Mokandarra hills run from southeast to northwest axis of the city. It is 36 km from Bundi. The city of Kota was once part of the ancient Rajput kingdom of Bundi. It became an independent principality in the 17th century. Apart from the various monuments that reflect the ancient glory of the city, Kota is also known for its palaces and gardens. Kota is located in a center of the southeast region of Rajasthan a region well known as Hadaoti - a land of the fairy tale palaces, lakes, temples, gardens and narrow alleys. Kota is located on the banks of the river Chambal. Historical sites and temples are surrounded by signs of modern development. It is one of the five major cities of Rajasthan and a very popular center of education.

The history of Kota dates back to the 12th century AD when the leader of Hada, Rao Deva, conquered the territory and founded Bundi and Hadoti. Later, at the beginning of the 17th century AD, during the reign of Mughal ruler Jahangir, the leader of Bundi - Rao Ratan Singh, gave the smallest principality of Kota to his son, Madho Singh and since then it became an important center for Rajputs’ power and culture. Among the prominent tourist attractions of Kota are City Palace of Kota, Kota Fort, Brij Raj Bhawan Palace, Jag Mandir Island Palace, royal cenotaphs etc.
