Kota Fort, an impressive structure that dominates the turbulent waters of the Chambal River, is a popular tourist attraction. According to local legend, Chief Bhil Kotya was killed by Jait Singh, the grandson of Rao Deva, the founder of Hada's authority. The foundation of the Garh (the Fort) was raised near the Salar Gazi Gate where Bhil chief was killed. This is the place where, until today, the Royal Family of Kota usually offers prayers. The rampart of Kota Fort is one of the highest in Rajasthan. Kota Fortress is heavily reinforced by massive bastions, 6 double doors and 25 towers (burj). In its surroundings are many palaces, Madho Singh Mahal, Raj Mahal, Bada Mahal, Chhatra Mahal and Jhala Haveli. The City Palace and Kota Fort are among few of the largest complexes in Rajasthan. The former leaders of Kota still retain a major part of the palace.
