Ramayan era holy site of Sage Atri & Sati Anusuya

Amidst dense forests in Chitrakoot is located Anusuya Ashram, nearby Sphatikshila. By the locals, the ashram is called as Anusuyaji, out of sheer reverence. Anusuyaji, the famous pilgrimage place on the south bank of Payaswini, is renowned for having been the residence of famed legend Anusuya. It is said that Anusuya, the wife of great sage Atri, was one of Daksha’s daughters. According to the Puranas, she practised severe penance for a thousand years, and by virtue of her religious merit, she created the river Mandakini, and by its waters maintained the fertility of the country during a 10-years long drought. Her endeavour to bring Mandakini to the region recalls legendary story of King Bhagiratha. Bhagirath was ancestor of Ram and had brought the sacred river Ganga on the earth after great penance. Anusuya is one of the seven ‘pativrata’ women in Hindu scriptures - Sita, Savitri, Ahilya, Anusuya, Tara, Draupadi and Mandodari. They are very often referred to as example to be followed by all the wives.

As per legend, Anusuya had transformed Brahma, Vishnu & Mahesh into kids as they had come to test her ‘satitva’ (सतीत्व). Symbolic of ideal purity of character of womanhood, ‘satitva’ is considered to be a combination of strength and devotion. Realizing her ‘satitva’, all the gods bowed down before Mother Anusuya and her fame spread all over. Many saints attained supreme power in the sacred shelter the ashram. Sita sought her blessings and teachings during the exile. It was Sati Anusuya who preached ‘Pativrata Dharma’ to Sita and gave her special clothes which remain always new & clean. Sati Anusuya is considered as an embodiment and epitome of chastity.

The ashram houses idols of Sage Arti, Sati Anusuya, Lord Dattatreya, Sage Durvasa and Moon god. Lord Dattatreya (anshavatar of Lord Vishnu), Sage Durvasa (anshavatar of Lord Shiv) and Moon god (anshavatar of Lord Brahma) are sons of Sati Anusuya. At present, at the very site of the ancient ashram, a grand temple has been built of concrete with walls depicting incidents & legends related to Mahasati Anusuya and her husband sage Atri. A large number of devotees gather at the ashram daily to express their reverence to Mahasati Anusuya. The deep devotion of woman pilgrims is quite palpable when one sees them going round the statues with folded hands. It is definitely an exceptional view. A beautiful ashram of Siddha Baba is built nearby Anusuya Ji.
