Thirty-five km from Bharatpur is Deeg, an 18th century strong-hold with massive fortifications surrounded by luxuriant woods and pools. There are palaces of exquisite architectural beauty made of cream-hued marble and sandstone. Well-planned gardens and fountains enhance the charm of these monuments. Gopal Bhawan with its large hall and marble swing—that once belonged to the Nawab of Avadh, and Suraj Bhawan studded with precious stones, are interesting features of the citadel.
