A ‘snake boat’ is called ‘Chundan Vallam’ and Snake Boat Race is called Vallam Kali in Malyalam language. The snake-boats at the regatta in Alleppey present an imposing spectacle. These boats are of extraordinary shape, with one end curving upward. With the front portion of the boat tapering gradually and the rear towering, the boats resemble snakes with their hoods raised. A crew, including oarsmen, singers and rudder-keepers man each boat which is gaily decorated for the occasion. These Snake Boats (Chundam Vallam) are the biggest water vessel used for sports purposes. The occupants carry banners and ornamental umbrellas of silk and gold. Nearly thirty boats participate in a regatta.
