Situated at a distance of 5 km from the ridge is the beautiful township of Summer Hill, at a height of 6500 feet on the railway line from Kalka to Shimla. Mahatma Gandhi lived in this calm place during his visits to Shimla. The Himachal Pradesh University is located here. Rashtrapati Niwas on the Summer Hill was once the Viceroy's Palace. This huge building amidst shady walks now houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, with a fine library and accommodation for research scholars. Set in the stunning Viceregal Lodge, built in 1884-1888 during the British period, the Institute has extensive gardens and is surrounded by beautiful pine trees.
