Tourist Attractions in Nainital

Nainital is one of the most popular and beautiful hill resorts in Uttarakhand. In addition to abounding natural beauty, the places to visit in Nainital include temples, lakes, orchids, ‘vedhshala’, holy spots etc. Nainital is situated at a height of 1938 meter above sea level and surrounded with high-peak mountains on three sides. Apart from Naini Lake, there are also other big lakes of India like Sattal, Bhimtal and Naukunchiyatal (means lake with nine corners). That’s why this place is known as ‘Lake District’. Its healthy climate attracted the British to establish their summer capital of joint region here during their reign and constantly this place has developed as a worth-visiting place. As per the ancient myths, three saints namely Uttari, Pulatsya, and Pulah brought sacred water from Mansarovar here to make ‘taals’ or ‘tal’. So it came to be known as ‘Tri-Rishi- Sarovar’. It is also named as ‘Small-Mansarovar’ as it contains some water from main Mansarovar. During summer, the cold breeze freshens up one’s mind. It is said that this city is named as Nainital due to its religious kuldevi ‘Naina Devi’.

Hanumangarhi in Nainital was constructed by the famous Saint Neem Karoli Baba. This temple is devoted to Lord Hanuman, where a 12- feet tall idol of Hanumanji has been setup. One can enjoy a very fantastic view of sunset from here. Another tourist attraction in Nainital is Vedhshala. One can see moon, stars and planets with the help of telescope from here. This place is a kilometre away from Hanumangarhi situated at Manora Park. Naina Peak is the highest peak of Nainital known as ‘China Peak’. Snow-view Point is also a popular attraction. One can reach this place through ropeway. From here, the fascinating snow – covered mountains of Himalayas can be viewed. Bhimeshwar Temple, Naag Temple and ‘ashrams’ of ‘rishis’ (saints) of Chyawan, Dattatreya and Kakortak near Bhimtal, surrounded with fascinating environment, too attract the tourists. Sattal is the group of seven lakes attached to each other. This is the most beautiful lake of Kumaon. One can enjoy trekking, boating along with watching wildlife. This lake is situated just 5 km far from Bhimtal. It is believed by the Kumaon people that after seeing all nine corners of Naukunchiyatal, one obtains salvation. Here, a big idol of Lord Hanuman is placed at Vaishno Devi Temple. There are plenty of colourful butterflies, Himalayan wildlife and flowers around this lake. Boating and fishing is banned in this lake. Paragliding facility is also available there.

Several important places like Mukteshwar, Jeolikot, Bhawaali and Ramgarh are located nearby Nainital. Mukteshwar is located in the lap of Kumaon hills. One can see clearly the peaks of Himalayas like Chaukhamba, Nandadevi, Trishul and Nandakot during clear weather. Jeolikotis the place where ShriAravind and Swami Vivekanand had worshipped. There is a golf course having 18 holes. A solar observatory is also located at this place. Binsar, Kausani, Ranikhet, Jaageshwar and Corbett National Parks are located at a few hours distance from here. Bhawaaliis located on the Nainital- Almora route. This place is famous for Kumaon fruits. There is also a Sanatorium, which worth a visit. Ramgarhis located on Nainital- Mukteshwar route. Here, one can enjoy watching the trees full of apples and barren icy mountain range of Himalayas. Famous Poet Rabindranath Tagore had written Geetanjali and ‘Sandhya Sangeet’ here. Apart from these, Baba Pathar, Kilbari, Ramnagar etc. are also famous places.
