Lucknow, the capital or Uttar Pradesh, is a unique city presenting a refined mixture of Hindu and Muslim cultures. It is looked upon as the most romantic of Indian state capitals. The city, situated on the bank of river Gomati is easily approachable by air, railway and road from anywhere. It is 541 km from Delhi. (Population: 3.3 million). "Lucknow" is believed to be a short form of its original name—Lakshmanavati, named after Lakshmana, Rama's brother. Lucknow was the capital of the Nawabs of Awadh for a long time. They built many palaces and mosques.

Today's Lucknow is an oriental dream city of splendour and poverty, spacious roads and dingy by-lanes, palatial buildings, unique monuments and green and gracious parks. Capital of Uttar Pradesh, that is, the Madhya Desha or heartland of India according to Manu, the hub of most fervent political activities in India, yet a city of easy pace and refined taste and temperament. Lucknow is to be seen, to be lived and to be believed.
