Overlooking the Ban-Ganga torrent is the Kangra town, once the headquarters of the district. Kangra has a number of historic temples, the most famous among them belonging to Goddess Vajreshwari.Kangra school of painting has its own specialty and is very famous. Thirty kilometers from Kangra is the temple of Jwalamukhi, built against a rocky cliff, one of the 51 seats where temples have sprung up on the fragments of the body of Sati, the consort of Shiva. The golden tower of the temple was a gift from Mughal ruler Akbar. There is no deity inside the temple, but a blue flame that symbolizes the Goddess is said to be burning since time immemorial, which is fed by a natural gas emanating from the rocks. A lovely town, at 1,246 metres amidst tea gardens, is Palampur, in Kangra valley. The temple of Vaijnath, built in 1804 is 15 km from here.
