About 6 km away from Jaipur city centre, the double-storeyed Nahargarh Fort, towering above the ancient horse-shoe-range of surrounding hills has elegant suites with interesting paintings, made with unorthodox combination of colours. Nahargarh means abode of tigers and was built by Jai Singh to bolster the defense of Amer. Since the fort is built at an altitude of 700 feet, no one could attack it till date. The fort, built in 1734 AD by Maharaja Jai Singh II, is connected to Jaigarh Fort by a huge wall. Originally named Sudarshan Garh, the upper terrace of Nahargarh Fort offers a incredible views of the Pink City. An adventurous tourist may trek 2 km track to reach the fort. A large number of tourists visit Nahargarh Fort every day. Moreover, many scenes of famous films like Rang De Basanti, Jodha Akbar and Shuddh Desi Romance have been shot here. The beauty of Nahargarh Fort doubles at night.

The main courtyard of Fort Nahargarh has a pretty baori (well). The most interesting building, the Palace Madhavendra Bhawan was laid in 19th century for the wives of Ram Singh II. Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh not only expanded the fort further but also built several buildings and pavilions within the complex in 1868 AD. There are separate and magnificent sections for queens. One can see its façade adorned with kiosks from Jaipur. The interior, empty of all furniture, has preserved some murals. A maze of corridors, patios and rooms, some of which are pierced with stained-glass windows, surrounds the courtyard. The most beautiful place of Nahargarh is Madhavendra Bhawan is designed by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. The interior of the building is decorated with beautiful murals and stucco design. The fort was used by royal ladies. Zanana Mahal and Mardana Mahal were also built in the fort. The beauty of Madhavendra Bhawan with 12 rooms is worth seeing. The interior decoration of the fort is a unique blend of Indian and European architecture. The rooms in the building are connected to each other through the corridors.

There are two temples in Nahargarh Fort; one for Jaipur rulers (located at entry gate called Tadgit) and another for Rathore prince (situated within the fort premises). The fort is divided into nine similar apartments, each having a lobby, bedroom, toilet, kitchen and store. Within the palace is Diwan-e-Aam where the king used to meet his subjects and listen to their problems and complaints.

Nahargarh Fort was used as a summer palace of the royal family of Jaipur. It has been the site of major historical events such as signing treaties with Maratha forces in the 18th century. The fort is also known to shelter many Europeans during the First Freedom Struggle of India in 1857 AD.

Summarily, Nahargarh Fort in Jaipur is though in decrepit condition but offers a peep into Rajput architecture and a beautiful glimpse of the city from here.
