Day 9
Jaisalmer sightseeing
Major tourist attractions in Jaisalmer are Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila or Golden Fort), historical mansions called havelis and
desert safari. Visiting Jaisalmer is absolutely essential to enjoy walking in winding alleyways, settling in a cafe above the old
city, meeting colorful people, climbing on the sand dunes etc. After breakfast, guided sightseeing of Jaisalmer, showcasing colorful
heritage and aspects, will commence. Jaisalmer Fort is the most popular monument in Jaisalmer. The old city had flourished only
within the ramparts of the fort. The Jaisalmer Fort has fascinated travelers forever. Its construction began in the 12th century.
It was initiated by the founder Rawal Jaiswal. Fort Jaisalmer is surrounded by a hundred bastions that marry the walls of the hill
on which it is perched. Now-a-days, a quarter of the population of Jaisalmer lives inside the fort. It is home to the Royal Palace
(Raj Mahal), beautiful Jain and Hindu temples, and a host of shops and stalls of all kinds. Some charming hotels occupy the ramparts
of the city.
Other prime attractions of Jaisalmer are the ancient mansions called haveli. Discover three absolutely splendid havelis of Jaisalmer.
The first is Patwon Ki Haveli, probably the largest and most impressive. This is a set of five havelis commissioned by wealthy Jain
merchant in 1800. Its construction lasted 55 years. The second is the Nathmal Ki Haveli, built in the 19th century and home to ministers
and senior officials. The third is the Salim Singh Ki Haveli, built in 1815 by the prime minister of the kingdom. It has 38 balconies,
all different. Its facade resembles the bow of a ship.
After discovering the city of Jaisalmer, go on a camel safari to explore the splendor of Thar Desert. Desert villages and sand dunes
attract a large cache of visitors. Famous for their dunes, Khuri & Sam are small villages located about 50 km from Jaisalmer. The tourists
reach here riding camels and stay overnight in luxurious tented accommodation. These sand dunes offer great view of sunset. The camps are
equipped with all modern amenities and the evening is made memorable as cultural music and dance performances are conducted here.
