Gangotri Temple, almost 300 years old and dedicated to Goddess Ganga, was built in 18th century by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa. It is located on the left bank of River Bhagirathi. This temple was renovated in the twentieth century with 20 feet structure of white marble stone. As per Hindu religious scriptures, Ganga touched the earth at this very place. As per another legend, it is the site where Pandavas performed considerably auspicious & significant 'Deva Yagna' to make up for the deaths of their family members. It is amazing to behold natural rock Shivalinga, called the Jalamagna Shivalinga. It can only be seen in the winters when water retreats. Jalamagna Shivalinga is the most worshipped symbol of in the temple alongside the Goddess Ganga. The temple of Gangotri remains open from May to November.
