Fort St. George

Fort St. George was built by the East India Company in mid-17th century. The greater part of the building is being used by the Government as offices though, many items are preserved here to highlight the phases of the development of this early colonial institution. A record of marriages dates back to 1680, showing some noteworthy names like Elihu Yale and Robert Clive—the latter then a clerk in the East India Company, to become in due course Lord Clive, Governor of Bengal. Behind the old barracks there is a house that, in 1798 had been occupied by Col. Wellesley. Seventeen years later he was to defeat Napoleon at Waterloo. He is remembered as the Duke of Wellington.
