During the days of Mughal hostility, the approaches to the Golden Temple at Amritsar used to be guarded by Mughal soldiers on Baisakhi day, so that they could seize guerilla leaders, to whom, as the Mughal knew, it was a religious obligation to visit the temple during the feast. And it was a point of honour with the more militant of the Sikhs to run the gauntlet of the Mughal cordon, have a dip in the sacred tank and cut their way back to safety. In those days, the Golden Temple during Baisakhi, was a scene of many a daring act and much bloodshed. At present, however, a pilgrimage to the Golden Temple is a pleasure and not a hazard, and thousands of Sikhs visit the shrine during Baisakhi and take the bath in the Pool of Immortality.
